{"id":7782,"date":"2026-08-14T10:54:42","date_gmt":"2026-08-14T13:54:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/investiga.uandes.cl\/?p=7782"},"modified":"2026-08-19T16:44:41","modified_gmt":"2026-08-19T19:44:41","slug":"cancer-letters-a-ciib-study-seeks-to-identify-the-role-of-damaged-mitochondria-in-the-progression-of-melanoma","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/investiga.uandes.cl\/en\/cancer-letters-a-ciib-study-seeks-to-identify-the-role-of-damaged-mitochondria-in-the-progression-of-melanoma\/","title":{"rendered":"Cancer Letters: A CiiB study seeks to identify the role of damaged mitochondria in the progression of melanoma"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nicol\u00e1s Georges, a Ph.D. student in Biomedicine and a researcher in the Nano-Regenerative Medicine program at the Center for Biomedical Research and Innovation (CiiB), along with Camila Fuentes and Francisca Alcayaga, published a study in the scientific journal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S030438352600220X\"><em>Cancer Letters<\/em> which shows that melanoma cells release damaged mitochondria into their surroundings and into the bloodstream, a process associated with tumor progression.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Key findings:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The Key Finding<\/strong>: Melanoma cells actively release dysfunctional mitochondria into the extracellular space. As Georges explains, these mitochondria exhibit structural abnormalities\u2014such as the loss of cristae\u2014and impaired function, with reduced respiratory capacity.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Why Is It Important to Study This?<\/strong>: In recent years, research into the \u201csecretome\u201d of cancer cells\u2014that is, the set of molecules they release into their surrounding environment\u2014has gained momentum, as it contains key factors in tumor progression and could pave the way for new therapies and diagnostic biomarkers.
