{"id":7432,"date":"2026-02-06T04:15:44","date_gmt":"2026-02-06T07:15:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/investiga.uandes.cl\/?p=7432"},"modified":"2026-04-16T11:35:52","modified_gmt":"2026-04-16T14:35:52","slug":"researcher-publishes-two-studies-on-youth-mental-health-worldwide","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/investiga.uandes.cl\/en\/researcher-publishes-two-studies-on-youth-mental-health-worldwide\/","title":{"rendered":"Evidence Shows the Relationship Between Emotional Problems and Academic Performance for the Development of New Intervention Models"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Javier Mella, a researcher from the <a href=\"https:\/\/investigadores.uandes.cl\/es\/organisations\/escuela-de-educaci%C3%B3n\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">School of Education<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/investigadores.uandes.cl\/es\/persons\/jorge-eduardo-gaete-olivares\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">and Jorge Gaete<\/a>, recently published two scientific articles in international indexed journals addressing different aspects of mental health in university students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first study, entitled <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S016503272502289X\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mental disorders &amp; self-injurious thoughts and behaviors predict high risk of role impairment among university students<\/a><\/em>, was published in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/journal\/journal-of-affective-disorders\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Journal of Affective Disorders<\/a> and is part of the international initiative <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hcp.med.harvard.edu\/wmh\/college_student_survey.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">World Mental Health International College Student (WMH-ICS)<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The research analyzed data from nearly 44,000 first-year students at 60 universities in ten countries and showed that <strong>more than a quarter experience significant impairment in their academic and daily functioning associated with emotional problems.<\/strong>The results indicate that mental disorders and self-injurious behaviors carry the highest risk of this type of impairment, enabling the identification of priority groups for preventive interventions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The second article, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1186\/s40814-025-01738-x\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Acceptability and feasibility of Reframe-IT+U for suicidal ideation in university students<\/a><\/em> , was published in the journal <a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/journal\/40814\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Pilot and Feasibility Studies<\/a>. The article presents the protocol of a pilot study evaluating the acceptability and feasibility of a preventive intervention based on cognitive-behavioral therapy, adapted to the Chilean university context.
