{"id":7327,"date":"2026-02-05T18:50:16","date_gmt":"2026-02-05T21:50:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/investiga.uandes.cl\/?p=7327"},"modified":"2026-04-16T11:36:50","modified_gmt":"2026-04-16T14:36:50","slug":"researcher-to-create-sustainable-solutions-to-treat-polluted-waters","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/investiga.uandes.cl\/en\/researcher-to-create-sustainable-solutions-to-treat-polluted-waters\/","title":{"rendered":"New Sustainable Solutions Created to Treat Contaminated Groundwater"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\"The world faces a growing problem of groundwater contaminated not only with nitrates, but also with traces of pharmaceuticals, antibiotics, and pesticides that reach the subsoil through agricultural, livestock, and domestic activities,\" explains <a href=\"https:\/\/investigadores.uandes.cl\/en\/persons\/c%C3%A9sar-esteban-huili%C3%B1ir-curio\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">C\u00e9sar Huili\u00f1ir<\/a>, a researcher and faculty member at the <a href=\"https:\/\/investigadores.uandes.cl\/en\/organisations\/facultad-de-ingenier%C3%ADa-y-ciencias-aplicadas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">School of Engineering and Applied Sciences<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The project, which was awarded a <a href=\"https:\/\/anid.cl\/concursos\/concurso-de-proyectos-fondecyt-regular-2026\/\">Fondecyt Regular 2025<\/a>funding, evaluates a biological process known as <strong>autotrophic denitrification<\/strong>, which uses elemental sulfur to remove nitrate from water, while also analyzing its ability to remove emerging contaminants across different treatment systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A central aspect of the study is the analysis of potencial environmental effects associated with these processes. \"We also study whether the process generates <strong>nitrous oxide<\/strong>\u2014 a gas that contributes to climate change \u2014 and how to reduce its emissions,\" Huili\u00f1ir notes, adding that there is very little scientific information on how pharmaceutical and pesticide residues influence these biological processes, especially regarding the generation of this greenhouse gas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The researcher's interest in this line of research stems from the growing concern about groundwater quality in Chile and the limitations of current solutions. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\"In many locations, especially rural ones, it is not feasible to implement complex or costly technologies,\" he says. From his experience in water treatment, he identified the need to develop simpler and more sustainable alternatives that not only purify the water, but also minimize adverse side effects on the environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\"This research can contribute to improving drinking water quality and, therefore, public health, while offering more accessible and sustainable treatment alternatives for rural communities,\" Huili\u00f1ir states regarding the project's broad societal impact. <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Furthermore, the results could support the water and sanitation industry in improving current nitrate removal processes and serve as a scientific basis for strengthening public policies and decision-making in water resource management.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The project is developed in collaboration with an interdisciplinary team of co-investigators: <a href=\"https:\/\/investigadores.uandes.cl\/en\/persons\/alberto-octavio-vergara-fern%C3%A1ndez\/\">Alberto Vergara<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uandes.cl\/tag\/facultad-de-ingenieria-y-ciencias-aplicadas\/\">School of Engineering and Applied Sciences<\/a>, UANDES); Jhosan\u00e9 Pag\u00e9s-D\u00edaz, Universidad de Santiago de Chile; Eduardo Leiva Llant\u00e9n, Pontificia Universidad Cat\u00f3lica de Chile; and Eduardo Leiva Gonz\u00e1lez, Universidad Bernardo O'Higgins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This research is also part of a broader scientific agenda led by Huili\u00f1ir, who is currently involved in several national projects funded by ANID and CORFO, focused on <strong>water treatment, nutrient removal, the circular economy, and the development of innovative technologies to address current water resource challenges<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The impact of expired medicines on nature: learn how to recycle them | 24 Horas TVN\" width=\"1140\" height=\"641\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/9tPnEx1kdu8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Developing efficient, accessible, and responsible solutions for groundwater treatment is the objective of this research, focused on the removal of contaminants such as antibiotics, herbicides, pharmaceuticals, and aromatic compounds.<\/p>","protected":false},"author":3,"featured_media":7328,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"inline_featured_image":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[2,14,1,28,3],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-7327","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-ciencia","category-innovacion","category-investigacion","category-nuevos-proyectos","category-salud"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v24.7 -
