Universidad de los Andes registered 21 selected projects out of a total of 65 applications, reaching an award rate of 32.3%, a result that places it in a range consistent with the historical performance of the national Fondecyt system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After learning the results of the Fondecyt Regular 2026 Competition<\/a>, the University confirmed its institutional performance both in its award rate and its positioning in key reference areas.<\/strong>This result takes place in a context of a sustained increase in the number of applications<\/strong> at the national level, which reflects greater participation by the academic community in an increasingly competitive and demanding landscape.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The projects proposed for funding in the Regular Fondecyt competition were published on January 23, 2026, by the National Research and Development Agency (Agencia Nacional de Investigaci\u00f3n y Desarrollo,ANID<\/a>), consolidating it as one of the main instruments of public funding for research excellence in Chile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The University actively participated in both this call and the Postdoctoral and Initiation<\/a>modalities, as part of its strategy for strengthening institutional research<\/a>. According to the national list, out of 680 projects proposed for funding, the University registered 21 selected projects<\/strong> out of a total of 65 applications, achieving an award rate of 32.3%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This result places UANDES in a range consistent with the historical performance of the national Fondecyt system, whose average award rate, considering all modalities, has been around 32.75% during the 2020-2024 period.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is worth noting that 4 of the 21 projects proposed for funding were led by female principal investigators,<\/strong>representing 19% of the institutional total. Female participation is mainly concentrated in the areas of Biomedicine and Legal Sciences,<\/strong>wich coincide with the areas of greatest consolidation and recognition within the University, a pattern that is consistent with the structural characteristics and academic trajectories of Fondecyt Regular.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fondecyt of Initiation 2026<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Within the framework of this competition, the projects proposed for funding address issues related to maternal and child health, neurodevelopment, applied social sciences, and emerging technologies.<\/strong>This program allows researchers in the early stages of their careers to advance their own lines of research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The academics awarded Fondecyt of Initiation 2026<\/a> funding are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

              -            Mario S\u00e1nchez Rubio<\/a> (Center for Biomedical Research and Innovation CiiB<\/a>)<\/strong>): a project using artificial intelligence to analyze molecular biomarkers present in the umbilical cord,<\/strong>aimed at studying the relationship between maternal stress during pregnancy and infant brain development and temperament.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

              -            Reyna Pe\u00f1ailillo Esc\u00e1rate<\/a> (School of Nursing and Midwifery<\/a>)<\/strong>: research analyzing how postpartum depression can alter breast milk composition<\/strong> and its impact on infant neurodevelopment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

              -            Hugo Benedetti Espinoza<\/a> (ESE Business School<\/a>)<\/strong>: a study analyzing the blockchain<\/em> ecosystem through digital transaction and network behavior data,<\/strong>aimed at understanding the dynamics of crypto-asset markets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

              -            Marcela Mello Silva<\/a> (School of Economics and Business Administration<\/a>)<\/strong>: a project analyzing the social, political, and economic transformations associated with the growth of Pentecostal communities in the region<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fondecyt Postdoctoral Fellowship 2026<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Through the Fondecyt Postdoctoral Fellowship 2026<\/a>, researchers from Universidad de los Andes will develop projects in the areas of engineering, quantum communications, and regenerative biomedicine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The awarded projects are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

              -            \u00c1lvaro Mattos<\/a> (School of Engineering and Applied Sciences<\/a>)<\/strong>: Structural safety research, focused on analyzing the load-bearing capacity of steel anchors in concrete elements<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

              -            Kei Sawada<\/a> (School of Engineering and Applied Sciences<\/a>)<\/strong>: a project in the area of quantum communications, oriented toward the development of technologies for the secure transmission of information through atmospheric channels<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

              -            Lina Anaya<\/a> (School of Dentistry<\/a>)<\/strong>: a regenerative medicine study applied to oral health, through the development of a biomimetic scaffold for periodontal tissue regeneration<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Directorate of Research and Doctorate<\/a> noted that these results reflect the work of Universidad de los Andes academics in advancing research across different areas of knowledge, reaffirming the institutional commitment to research and researcher training.<\/p>\n\n\n
