{"id":6642,"date":"2025-11-04T17:32:21","date_gmt":"2025-11-04T20:32:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/investiga.uandes.cl\/?p=6642"},"modified":"2025-12-03T09:40:09","modified_gmt":"2025-12-03T12:40:09","slug":"researchers-awarded-inter-university-funding-for-innovations-in-medicine-dentistry-and-education","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/investiga.uandes.cl\/en\/researchers-awarded-inter-university-funding-for-innovations-in-medicine-dentistry-and-education\/","title":{"rendered":"Researchers Win Inter-University Funding for Innovations in Medicine, Dentistry, and Education"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>With the aim of encouraging the participation of young researchers in the application and awarding of competitive funds for research projects, the awards for the III Inter-University Contest for Initiation in Associative Research, organized by the Inter-University Network, were announced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this third call, Universidad de los Andes had a particularly outstanding performance, winning three collaborative projects, led by the following researchers: <a href=\"https:\/\/investigadores.uandes.cl\/es\/persons\/duniel-ricardo-ortu%C3%B1o-borroto\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Duniel Ortu\u00f1o<\/strong><\/a> (School of Dentistry), <a href=\"https:\/\/investigadores.uandes.cl\/es\/persons\/karin-alejandra-roa-tampe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Karin Roa<\/strong><\/a> (School of Social Sciences), and <a href=\"https:\/\/investigadores.uandes.cl\/es\/persons\/paula-correa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Paula Correa<\/strong><\/a> (School of Medicine).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These were the winning projects:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/investigadores.uandes.cl\/es\/projects\/aprender-a-colaborar-en-la-formaci%C3%B3n-inicial-en-educaci%C3%B3n-parvula\">\"Learning to Collaborate in Initial Early Childhood Education Training:<\/a>Towards the Diagnosis and Development of Dialogue-Based Collaborative Competences\"<\/em><\/strong>by Karin Roa Tampe, from the School of Education of the School of Social Sciences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the academic, in order to collaborate effectively with other professionals in the workspaces, we need to develop <strong>collaborative skills<\/strong>These are skills that are not usually developed during initial professionalization. A key skill, Roa points out, within this competency is the <strong>use of dialogue to solve problems<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\"This project seeks to address this task in initial training by proposing a system to diagnose and develop sociolinguistic repertoires to participate in collaborative problem-solving dialogues among Early Childhood Education students from Chilean universities,\" she says, adding that \"lacking an <strong>adequate sociolinguistic repertoire to collaborate prevents dialogue, but also reasoning and understanding of situations.\"<\/strong>The project seeks to develop a system for diagnosing these capabilities, the results of which will be used to design specific training support in short workshops during the second year of the program.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.uandes.cl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/image-64-1024x1024.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-314993\" style=\"width:432px;height:auto\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Karin Roa.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/investigadores.uandes.cl\/en\/projects\/impacto-del-tratamiento-con-pr%C3%B3tesis-removibles-en-la-sintomatolo\"><em>Impact of Removable Prosthesis Treatment on Depressive Symptoms in Edentulous Patients<\/em><\/a><\/strong>, developed by Duniel Ortu\u00f1o Borroto of the School of Dentistry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the researcher, <strong>tooth loss not only affects eating or smiling but can also have a profound impact on self-esteem and emotional well-being.<\/strong> By offering dental rehabilitation that restores functionality and esthetics, the project aims to improve people's quality of life, promoting both their oral health and their mental health. In practical terms, the results could help demonstrate that <strong>affordable dental treatment can also be an effective tool to prevent or lessen depression.<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\"This project seeks to understand if recovering teeth through removable prostheses has an impact on improving mood and reducing symptoms of depression in people who have partially or totally lost their teeth. To this end, <strong>138 patients who will receive this type of treatment at the teaching clinics of Universidad de los Andes and Universidad del Desarrollo will be studied.<\/strong>We have conducted studies in this area as a research group, and we want to continue contributing with evidence for clinical decision making with an interdisciplinary approach. As a research group, we have conducted studies in this area and we want to continue contributing by providing evidence for clinical decision making with an interdisciplinary approach,\" says Ortu\u00f1o.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.uandes.cl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/image-1-1-1024x1024.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-314994\" style=\"width:424px;height:auto\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Duniel Ortu\u00f1o.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/investigadores.uandes.cl\/es\/projects\/estudio-de-asociaci%C3%B3n-entre-la-hipercolesterolemia-suprafisiol%C3%B3gi\"><em>Association study between supraphysiologic hypercholesterolemia of pregnancy and metabolic hepatic steatosis.<\/em><\/a><\/strong>presented by Paula Correa Frigerio of the School of Medicine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Correa's words, the project seeks to evaluate the relationship between elevated levels of cholesterol in maternal plasma during the third trimester and the development of fatty liver during the postpartum period, using an instrument called elastography. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\"This will be performed on patients in their puerperium between 18 and 30 months postpartum.
