{"id":4236,"date":"2025-02-20T11:49:21","date_gmt":"2025-02-20T14:49:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/test.uandes.cl\/?p=4236"},"modified":"2025-11-26T18:28:05","modified_gmt":"2025-11-26T21:28:05","slug":"research-using-artificial-intelligence-to-predict-crime-patterns-wins-fondef-it-for-its-second-stage","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/investiga.uandes.cl\/en\/research-using-artificial-intelligence-to-predict-crime-patterns-wins-fondef-it-for-its-second-stage\/","title":{"rendered":"Project that improves crime prosecution through a platform using AI and social media analysis wins FONDEF IT grant for its second stage."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The project, titled\u00a0<strong>\"Scaling and validation of an integrated system for crime prosecution using advanced data analytics,\"\u00a0<\/strong>will develop a\u00a0<strong>systems integration and model improvement plan\u00a0<\/strong>that was presented in the first part of the project\u00a0<strong>FONDEF ID20i10230.<\/strong>\u00a0This which involved Universidad de Chile, Universidad de los Andes, and Universidad del B\u00edo-B\u00edo, in collaboration with the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.fiscaliadechile.cl\/Fiscalia\/quienes\/index.jsp#:~:text=Es%20un%20organismo%20aut%C3%B3nomo%2C%20cuya,los%20tres%20Poderes%20del%20Estado.\">Public Prosecutor's Office (known as the National Prosecutor's Office)<\/a><\/strong> and the company <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/es.sosafeapp.com\/\">SOSAFE.<\/a><\/strong> The\u00a0<strong>research, which uses Artificial Intelligence (AI) for decision support for crime prevention, is co-led by Carla Vairetti,<\/strong>\u00a0at the\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uandes.cl\/facultad\/facultad-de-ingenieria-y-ciencias-aplicadas\/\">School of Engineering and Applied Sciences<\/a><\/strong>, and won a\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/anid.cl\/investigacion-aplicada-e-innovacion\/investigacion-tecnologica-it\/\">FONDEF IT<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>grant to continue with the development of its second stage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><sub>The platform for the Public Prosecutor's Office will focus on extracting names of people or places, as well as identifying the modus operandi of crimes, through victims' accounts, using social network analysis and AI, to improve criminal prosecution processes.<\/sub><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>\"This project<strong>\u00a0improves the prosecution of crime through a platform that integrates various sources of relevant information, using AI and social network analytics<\/strong>. The\u00a0<strong>FONDEF<\/strong>\u00a0director is Richard Weber (UCH), and my participation is as co-director, together with co-investigators Sebasti\u00e1n Maldonado (UCH) and Freddy Troncoso (UBioBio). Undergraduate students \u2014who will develop their theses\u2014 and master's and doctoral students will also participate. In addition, the collaboration of UANDES alumni who worked on the initial phase of the project is also planned,\" explains Carla Vairetti.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><sub>In this new phase of the project<strong>\u00a0two integrated platforms will be created for the prosecution of crimes with a high level of technological maturity demonstrated in real-life situations<\/strong>. \"We will expand the crime analysis by incorporating additional sources of information, analyzing new crimes, and extending its application nationwide.<\/sub><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><sub>The platform for the Public Prosecutor's Office will focus on extracting names of people or places, as well as identifying the modus operandi of crimes, through victims' accounts, using social network analysis and AI, to improve criminal prosecution processes.<\/sub><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>SOSAFE's data-driven platform&nbsp;<strong>will be aimed at police and municipalities and will use predictive models of robberies in different areas to deter crime and design preventive patrol strategies.
