The year 2024 was a year of significant advances for Universidad de los Andes<\/a><\/strong>, with\u00a0milestones that stood out in research, innovation, and contribution to social and scientific development at the national and international level.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\u00a0IMPACT Center<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0led a revolutionary\u00a0treatment for osteoarthritis<\/strong>using umbilical cord-derived exosomes. The therapy showed promising results in its first patient and is being prepared for a Phase I clinical trial with 12 participants. For their part, researchers at the\u00a0Center for Biomedical Research and Innovation,<\/strong>\u00a0CiiB<\/strong><\/a>, advanced on a\u00a0non-invasive method for early detection of Alzheimer's disease, combining cell biology and artificial intelligence.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the area of mental health,<\/strong>an interdisciplinary team developed a blood test to diagnose bipolar disorder,<\/strong>while the JAPI project<\/a><\/strong>, focused on an educational video game, demonstrated its positive impact on the cognitive and emotional development of preschool children.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Professor Jos\u00e9 Francisco Delpiano <\/strong>stood out with his LENS<\/a><\/strong>research, which uses artificial intelligence to diagnose skin diseases noninvasively<\/strong>. In addition, the Center for Territorial Studies<\/a><\/strong> addressed topics such as urban and rural sustainability, integrating the relationship between ecosystems and human habitat.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The School of Economics and Business Administration<\/a><\/strong> created the\u00a0Human Development Lab<\/a><\/strong>, focused on influencing\u00a0public policies related to education and labor development.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Childhood and adolescence<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Leer+ project<\/strong>, led by Pelusa Orellana<\/strong>, improved its platform to strengthen students' reading comprehension through personalized exercises.<\/strong> In addition, Marianela Navarro<\/strong> investigated the reasons behind the low representation of men in basic education<\/strong>a key issue in the face of Chile's teacher shortage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From the School of Psychology<\/a><\/strong>,\u00a0\u00c1lvaro Verg\u00e9s<\/strong>\u00a0initiated a longitudinal study on the\u00a0relationship between impulsivity, sleep quality and the development of depressive symptomatology in young adults.\u00a0<\/strong>Meanwhile,\u00a0Consuelo Araos,<\/strong>a researcher at the\u00a0Signos Center<\/a><\/strong>, is investigating the challenges of lower-middle-class youths in household formation, providing a sociological view on\u00a0demographic changes in Santiago.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Recognition of our academics and students<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

During this year, Professor\u00a0Rodrigo Astroza<\/strong>, School of Engineering and Applied Sciences<\/a><\/strong>was recognized as\u00a0one of the most cited scientists in the world and named Structural Engineer of the Year.\u00a0<\/strong>Likewise,\u00a0Mar\u00eda Jes\u00fas Araya, a doctoral student, won first place at the International Congress on Gene and Cell Therapy; and Dr. Fernando Figueroa Elizalde was inducted into the Chilean Academy of Medicine, highlighting his career in immunology and innovative cell therapies.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the environmental field, the academic Jos\u00e9 Francisco Delpiano<\/strong> developed ArboCensus<\/a><\/strong>, an application for cataloging urban trees with citizen collaboration<\/strong>. In addition, an interdisciplinary team led by Jos\u00e9 Ignacio Mart\u00ednez<\/strong> created a computational tool to improve legal certainty in projects subject to the Environmental Impact Assessment System (SEIA).<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Commitment to society<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The School of Dentistry, in collaboration with Universidad de La Frontera, made progress on a\u00a0clinical guideline for the diagnosis and management of oral cancer<\/strong>with the support of the Ministry of Health. In parallel, Consuelo Cer\u00f3n from the School of Nursing<\/a><\/strong>, researched the implementation of\u00a0Advanced Practice Nursing in Chile, highlighting its potential to address critical public health needs.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The School of Communication<\/a><\/strong> led two ANID-funded projects, focusing on the\u00a0information pluralism and the analysis of disinformation in elections<\/strong>reaffirming UANDES' commitment to the quality of information and democracy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The year culminated with the award of\u00a013 Fondecyt Initiation 2025 projects,<\/strong>\u00a0with an award rate of 40.6%. In the conovocation\u00a0Fondecyt Postdoctorate 2025 call, five projects sponsored by Universidad de los Andes<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0were selected for awards, representing an award rate of 38.5%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
