{"id":1284,"date":"2025-02-05T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-02-05T03:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/envirra.com\/themes\/sprout2\/2020\/12\/30\/five-solid-evidences-why-photography-is-bad-for-your-career-development\/"},"modified":"2025-11-26T18:58:04","modified_gmt":"2025-11-26T21:58:04","slug":"in-search-of-the-international-seal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/investiga.uandes.cl\/en\/in-search-of-the-international-seal\/","title":{"rendered":"Chilean researchers develop new test to diagnose hypertension in young Chileans"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A team led by scientist<a href=\"https:\/\/www.latercera.com\/que-pasa\/noticia\/maroun-khoury-el-cientifico-que-educa-celulas-para-combatir-el-cancer-en-chile-es-revolucionario\/EMHNS36CANE7XOQIM7XOE6BUXI\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>&nbsp;Maroun Khoury, Director of the IMPACT Center of Excellence <\/strong><\/a>, which includes leading scientists from important research centers such as<a href=\"https:\/\/i-health.cl\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong> Millennium Institute in Engineering and Artificial Intelligence for Health (i-HEALTH)<\/strong><\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/ingenieriabiologicaymedica.uc.cl\/es\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Institute of Biological and Medical Engineering of Pontificia Universidad Cat\u00f3lica<\/strong><\/a>, the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.uandes.cl\/ciib\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong> Center for Biomedical Research and Innovation of Universidad de los Andes<\/strong><\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amtc.cl\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Advanced Mining Technology Center of University of Chile<\/a>, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pucv.cl\/uuaa\/profesora-claudia-altamirano-se-adjudica-proyecto-anillo-de\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Science and Technology Research Ring 2021 project for the production of biopharmaceuticals at Pontificia Universidad Cat\u00f3lica de Valpara\u00edso<\/a> , found that the transfer of mitochondria (the energy-producing organelles of cells) from mesenchymal stem cells to T cells <strong>can significantly increase their survival rates and their ability to fight cancer.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/translational-medicine.biomedcentral.com\/articles\/10.1186\/s12967-024-05627-4\"><strong>The study, published in the scientific journal, Journal of Translational Medicine,<\/strong><\/a>was conducted in collaboration with Brazil's National Cancer Institute (INCA), highlights how this innovative mitochondrial transfer technique can enhance natural and engineered T cells, paving the way for advances in cancer immunotherapy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This research was conducted in the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.latercera.com\/que-pasa\/noticia\/maroun-khoury-el-cientifico-que-educa-celulas-para-combatir-el-cancer-en-chile-es-revolucionario\/EMHNS36CANE7XOQIM7XOE6BUXI\/\">IMPACT Basal Center<\/a><\/strong>, which is <strong>financed by the <a href=\"https:\/\/anid.cl\/\">Chilean National Agency for Research and Development (ANID)<\/a><\/strong> , <strong>develops and implements technologies that allow access in Chile to the most successful advanced medical therapies in the world.<\/strong>IMPACT also supports the creation of a network, both in Santiago and in the regions, to accelerate multidisciplinary research with high translational impact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/test.uandes.cl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/MG_7125-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"From left to right: Fernando Figueroa; Juan Pablo Acevedo; Francisca Alcayaga and Maroun Khoury.\" class=\"wp-image-4136\" srcset=\"https:\/\/investiga.uandes.cl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/MG_7125-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/investiga.uandes.cl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/MG_7125-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/investiga.uandes.cl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/MG_7125-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/investiga.uandes.cl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/MG_7125-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/investiga.uandes.cl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/MG_7125-2048x1365.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">From left to right: Fernando Figueroa; Juan Pablo Acevedo; Francisca Alcayaga and Maroun Khoury.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>This discovery<strong> has implemented  an innovative method to enhance T and CAR-T cells, the natural (produced by our body) and artificial (produced in a laboratory) defenders against cancer, by providing them with a mitochondrial super-charge.<\/strong> CAR-T cells are engineered immune cells that are modified to express receptors that specifically target cancer cells. This therapy involves extracting a patient's T cells, enhancing them in a clinical-grade laboratory, and reintroducing them to improve cancer-fighting capabilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\"It's like transforming a standard sedan into a race car. These so-called 'Mito-CAR-T' cells not only achieve greater survival, but are equipped for maximum performance, enabling them to execute a more efficient attack against cancer cells,\" explains Maroun Khoury.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><sub>Published in the scientific journal Journal of Translational Medicine, the study, which was conducted in collaboration with Brazil's National Cancer Institute (INCA), highlights how this innovative mitochondrial transfer technique can enhance natural and engineered T cells, paving the way for advances in cancer immunotherapy. <\/sub><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>\"Basically, we are teaching the old cells new tricks. Manipulation during manufacturing can lead to depletion of the cells, reducing their efficacy.
