The academic of the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Sciences and associate researcher of the Millennium Institute for Research in Optics (MIRO) received the award during the international congress SPIE Optics + Photonics, held in San Diego, USA.

Jaime Anguita, an academic from the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences of the Universidad de los Andes and associate researcher at the Millennium Institute for Research in Optics (MIRO)was recognized as a Senior Member from International Society of Optics and Photonics (SPIE)This category highlights the trajectory of leaders in research and technology transfer.

The appointment was made official during the last edition of the SPIE Optics + PhotonicsThe conference was held in San Diego, USA, where Anguita also served as Chair of the conference "Laser Communication and Propagation over the Atmosphere and the Oceans".

"I am very happy and thankful for this recognition, as I was nominated by two fellows from SPIE. For me it means an important support to the work we develop in Chile and, at the same time, an opportunity to give more visibility to the research in Optics and Photonics from the Universidad de los Andes and the MIRO Institute", the researcher pointed out.

Anguita has been part of the community SPIE for more than 15 years and has dedicated his career to the study of free space optical communications, an area in which he has set up laboratories and experimental facilities in the UANDESpositioning Chile at the technological frontier. Its main lines of work include laser propagation in the atmosphere; adaptive optics; optical vortices; optical channel statistics and fiber-free quantum communication, among others.

SPIE was founded in 1995, has more than 25,000 members worldwide and is one of the most influential scientific organizations in the field of optics and photonics. Each year, it honors those who have contributed significantly to the advancement of knowledge and technological development in this field. "SPIE is probably the world's most important scientific society in optics, photonics and their industrial applications. It functions as a compass of the state of the art and technological trends; it is where you learn what science will be explored in the next space missions, directly from its researchers," said Anguita.

"The appointment gives me the support to propose actions to strengthen the training of new generations of professionals in this field, which is key for Chile to advance in research and technological development at world level."he concluded.
